Things to consider

A bed is an important investment in your quality of life, and when you consider that every $1000 you spend represents just 27cents a night over 10 years, it’s worthwhile investing in a bed that will give you a quality sleep.

The best bed for you isn’t necessarily the most expensive one.

Everyone has their own comfort preferences and Sleepyhead has a wide range of beds to cater to every unique need and comfort preference. Many of our beds feature a pillow top which adds a soft cocooning comfort layer to your bed. The internal foam and spring technology within a bed gives your body the support it needs to get a great sleep, whilst the pillow top creates the softness on the top of the bed. Everyone’s preference is different, so have a think as to whether you prefer a shallower comfort layer or a deeper comfort layer that will contour to your body. Nothing beats experiencing a bed in person so when you’re in store make sure you check out the different comfort layer options in your bed choice.

Your bed is more than just a mattress.

Pillows

A great sleep needs a great pillow. The right pillow will work in unison with your mattress while supporting your head & neck, to assist with spinal alignment. With 25% of your bed to body contact body being with your pillow it’s vital to ensure your pillow provides the right level of comfort and support. We have a range of heights & feels to choose from so you can pick the best fit for your mattress.

Protectors

To keep your sleeping area hygienic, invest in a protector for your mattress. This will ensure your mattress has a longer lasting life & you sleep on a healthier sleep surface. Pick one with more cushioning to add an extra layer to your bed, or pick a protector that maintains the feel of your mattress with the same protection.

Sheets

There’s nothing quite like the feel of crisp, cool, new sheets and the right sheets are a vital ingredient in the perfect night’s sleep. Thread counts and fabric types are often used to confuse consumers. Thread counts advertised in excess of 500 are commonly created by spinning multiple lower-grade cotton threads together, the result can often be sheets that wear far quicker and pill far easier than quality sheets with a lower thread count.

Duvets

Duvets are not only there for warmth & comfort, but with the right choice your duvet can help keep your sleep area healthy & your body at the right temperature. Consider the fibres & fills of your duvet and pick one that suits your sleeping needs.

The average lifespan of a bed, or at least the mattress, is about 8-10 years.

After this time, if used regularly, a bed may have deteriorated by as much as 75% from its original condition.

An old bed isn’t hygienic.

Dampness and water absorption within a mattress will also reduce the quality of your sleep and the bed feeling cold to sleep in. We lose as much as 500mls of moisture a night that goes directly into your mattress. Sleepyhead’s commitment to innovation has included research and investment in fabrics that promote drier sleep. Mattresses are also the ideal home for dust mites and can cause irritation and restless nights for those that are allergy sensitive or have asthma.

Bed size does matter

The more room you have in your bed the better quality of sleep you will have, especially if you’re sleeping with a partner. Space around you helps promote undisturbed sleep. Two people sleeping together should select at least a queen and preferably a king or super king size bed to give you adequate space for. It also pays to take into account younger family members who may end up sharing your bed. They may be little, but they can take up a surprising amount of space!

Sleepyhead beds come in a variety of sizes

Please note that the sizes available do vary by range and retailer. Please check with your local store for information on the sizes they have available. The height of the mattress will also vary depending on the support system and the comfort layers for a particular range and model.

Minimise being woken at night by partner movement

Interrupted sleep caused by your partner moving around during the night is a common occurrence for many of us. We have different technologies such as Sensorzone and Swisstek which help to minimise this partner disturbance. If this is an important consideration for you, make sure you let your salesperson know.

We’re not created equal

It’s easy to imagine that the support a jockey needs is different to that of an All Black. We are all different shapes and sizes which means that we each require different levels of support. The Sleep Selector can help you find the right bed to match your personal requirements.

Other things to consider

There are other things that you may want to consider, as they may influence your choice of bed. Have a think about how important these things are so you can discuss them in-store with your sales person.
  • Do you suffer allergies?
  • Do you have a preference for 100% natural products?
  • Do you tend to feel hot or feel the cold in bed?
  • Do you have a personal ‘feel’ preference?

Dress to test

Wear loose fitting clothing that’s comfy and easy to get up and off the beds. You don’t sleep with your shoes on so feel free to remove your shoes if you want to.

Time and sleep style

  • Spend 5-10 minutes on each bed.
  • Side, Back or Tummy sleeper? Always lie the same way on the bed as you normally sleep.
  • Close your eyes if you wish so you can better concentrate on how your body feels on the bed. It’s crucial you feel fully supported with your spine nicely aligned. The aim is to find the bed that feels naturally comfortable and free of any aches and pressure points.

There’s 2 in a bed

If you sleep with a partner, it’s best to try the beds together. Move positions while your partner lies in their most comfortable position. This will enable you to determine how effective the bed is at minimising partner disturbance. Make sure you give a chance to focus on your individual needs and how the bed feels for you.
